Venice is an international audience, people want to feel like they’ve just gone to a very obscure mall piled high with art objects, they want to enjoy a coffee they can’t afford, inhale an aromatic oud musk on an attractive man walking down the street, test drive a Tesla, wait in line for ice cream behind a young actress in a crop top, they don’t want to be confronted with trash.
Venice Wildlife

Venice Wildlife began as a daily creative practice of noticing and documenting, attempted appreciation, and understanding of fast-moving landscapes. Revisiting that practice, I then authored a book about Venice, California and the people that make it. I created the book in risograph to give the photos texture, since they were originally shot in lower resolution.

The book is available at independent bookstores throughout Los Angeles and became a staff pick at Arcana, my favorite art bookstore.

Trash and found objects are commonplace for city dwellers, but in a few square blocks of Venice, CA, trash is not limited to paper wrappers and discarded food. Instead, trash is currency. Stolen merchandise, a full set of golf clubs, a couple of discarded mixtapes that might have fallen or been ditched. A lazy donation to the homeless. What becomes of them?

Venice Wildlife is a collection of trash that shows signs of struggle, new money, and angst at local politico. These photos were taken during a time when people were moving in and cleaning up. And what Venice lost in the process.
